The sight of the Wapping plant has been almost entirely knocked down and redeveloped by a company named the Berkley group. The redevelopment completely erases the sites history as a printing plant and instead focusses on its history as a dockland, including etching style illustrations of imported goods and a symbol known as the manicule.
The following is a fabricated presentation by the artist discussing the history of this typographic symbol using archive photographs from the Wapping dispute. The presentation states that as a typographic emblem, the manicule became a symbol of solidarity among the printers’ unions during the dispute and that stereotype had managed to include the symbol in signage in Wapping’s redevelopment.
